Week Four – DATA

MEMES

  1. How do you describe the data that composes your dataset? Make sure you cover both the details on the medium and the social, cultural, geographical and political context from which this data is being extracted.

in the lesson following this task I realised that the data set theme I chose was very broad which makes it harder to answer the questions. so to answer the questions I decided to make it very specific ” SpongeBob related memes used in the uk”. memes in general are used as conversation starters and even help many people connect within some internet communities. many argue that some memes can be very harmful towards certain cultures as all memes have a creator that released the photo to a certain audience. however, as the internet gets hold onto the meme many people can use it in the wrong context especially with harmful intent. this is why when choosing SpongeBob related memes specifically I made sure that it doesn’t effect or slander anyone but is inclusive for everyone.

geographically this data will be extracted from the uk.

I guess all memes are used in political cases to mock or praise laws and law makers and so forth but I don’t think sponge bob related memes are specifically used in this context and if they are I am completely unaware as I can’t find anything online.

2. How big do you think your dataset can grow? And how long will it take until you think it is complete? How can it be maintained in the future?

I think that this data set can grow immensely as there are multiple SpongeBob episodes in which these memes can be found and made.

to complete it may take anywhere up to 6 months- 1 year and even after it is complete there will be many new memes that will be added everyday.

3.In which ways can it be visualised, heard or ‘made sensible’? (this question will be explored later as well if you choose to further this project)

I was thinking of having a map of the uk and in different areas it would change colour depending on how often the memes get used, and when the user clicks on an area it will zoom into the memes that have been used. for example something like this :
