Week Three – open sources + code freedom

Dilan Cokyasar ⋅ 11th June 2022

the artists I chose to look into for this week was nora al-badri and jan nikolai nelles. these artists initially made a scan copy of the bust of Nefertiti which is held in a museum in Berlin in its own separate room where visitors can not take photos of this sculpture. it is said that the sculpture was stolen from Egypt and that the germans are now gatekeeping this amazing piece of art, sounds very petty to me.

the museum its self has a scan copy of the sculpture that they keep private for economic gain. the artists felt the need to free this data by scanning a copy of the sculpture which they would then publish to the public redeeming all the rights back also giving relevance to the data and the piece. many called it the “most ethical art heist”. jan Nikolai says by doing this “the copy is no longer a slave to the original”.

I believe that by doing this “art heist ” it has allowed Egypt to re gain a part of what is theirs and taking back some of the power that was stolen while also permitting artists from around the world to experiment with different styles surrounding this piece. some examples are :

Week Two – Computers + Language

Dilan Cokyasar ⋅ 11th June 2022

the task I chose to do is making a cup of tea. at first I didn’t understand what we were asked to do and it did take some time to wrap my head around. however I did manage to come up with an unfinished “how to make tea” code.

I used some what of a p5js language as it just came easier to me. I changed some of the words here and there like create canvas was changed to countertop to resemble a kitchen.the words in highlighted in orange are variables that I have created .

https://esoteric.codes/blog/chef-multicoding-esolang-aesthetics

at first it just started as a list of instructions just to get an idea:

1.1 making a tea [start loop]

    1.2 put teabag into cup

    1.3 pour water into kettle

2.1 put the kettle on

   2.2 flip the switch

2.3 wait until water is hot

3.1 pour hot water into the mug

    3.2 stir

3.3 wait until tea is brewed

4.1 get the milk

   4.2 open fridge

   4.3 get the milk

4.4 pour milk into the mug

   4.5 stir

5.1 add sugar

    5.2 stir

6.1 tea is ready to enjoy [end loop]

Week One – What is a Computer ?

Dilan Cokyasar ⋅ 11th June 2022

the google definition of a computer is : an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

Timeline of computer evolution | Timetoast timelines

however looking back at the historical context of how computers came to be ,really changes the perspective of how one may view a computer and its purpose . some of the very first computers were used as digital diaries only storing simple data information and calculations. many years later it is almost impossible to not interact with some sort or computer technology as it is integrated into our everyday lives. some so small they fit in our back pocket ……. phones .

yes, a part of me agrees with the google definition to a certain extent but I also believe that computers are a much simpler version of the human brain with various limits . some may disagree with the statement however, if humans are programming these computers to follow certain rules and store data isn’t it almost like raising a child ? …… maybe a far stretch.

https://www.researchgate.net/post/Is-the-human-brain-like-a-computer-if-so-in-how-many-ways-and-why-is-it-different

I think in the future computers may be programmed into consciousness and potentially overcome the human race due to the large fast paced technological field. here’s a possibility, how about a computers performing an operation ??
